How to Program the Legend Series
Requirements
To program the console you will need a PC with a serial port and a standard Null Modem cable, which should be wired as below:
End 1 -Female 9 Pin D-Type End 2 – Female 9 Pin D-Typ
Pin 1 Not Connected Pin 1
Pin 2 ----------------\ /------------------- Pin 2
Pin 3 ----------------/ \------------------- Pin 3
Pin 4 Not Connected Pin 4
Pin 5 ------------------------------------- Pin 5
Pin 6 Not Connected Pin 6
Pin 7 Not Connected Pin 7
Pin 8 Not Connected Pin 8
Pin 9 Not Connected Pin 9
Pin 5 is a pin-to-pin connection, however Pins 2 and 3 are reversed at one end of the cable.
No other pins are connected.
The computer should be linked by the null modem cable to the rear RS232 cable located by the Legend power connector
Note: We recommend this cable has a maximum length of 5m.
Installing The Legend PC Update Software
The software is available on floppy disk, via the link at the bottom of this page or can be E-Mailed upon request. If you are installing from a floppy, then bypass step one.
1. On the PC, Create a directory called Lsutil
2. Extract the file LSUtil Ver2-0 Release.zip to this directory, using a tool such as WinZip.
3. Run the LSUtilV2 application.
4. In the LSUtil File menu, select Setup Comms. This will display the four possible COM ports, one of which will be highlighted (normally COM1). If you have connected the Null Modem cable to a port other than COM1, select it here. Click on OK to complete the configuration of the COM port.
Programming New Software Into The Legend
Due to the way the hardware in the Legend is arranged the software upgrade has two stages, one for each microprocessor. Half way through the process, you will be requested by the software to turn the console off, switch over to the B microprocessor and then turn back on.
When you first run the LSUtil update program a new sub-directory called SHOW will be created. Console memory contents will be uploaded to this directory. Any software updates should also be copied into this directory ready for when the console will be updated.
Stage 1:
1. Ensure the console is running from the A processor and then switch the console off.
2. Connect the Null Modem cable between the console and an available COM port on the PC.
3. If the LSUtil program is not already running on the PC, run it now (when this program starts there will be a slight delay as it looks for a serial port to use.) Note: COM1 is the default port; if you are not using the default port, be sure to set it using the method described in step 4 of “Installing the Legend PC Update Software” above).
4. Select the Console menu and click on Program. The Program window will be shown.
5. Select Browse and highlight the file ‘***.mhx’ you wish to update to. Click on Open to select this file as the new software to be programmed to the console. The file name will be shown in the program window.
6. Click on the Program button. The screen will display the following:
Opening Console Program File... OK
PLEASE SWITCH THE CONSOLE ON
7. Switch on the console. The computer will now communicate with the console (Note: this may take up to seven seconds), and you will then see the following:
Handshaking successful - Sending flashloader...
................................-
Starting flashloader...
Baud Rate 38400.
Blank checking flash...
needs erasing.
8. At this point the software will erase the Flash ROM in the console. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS PROCESS IS NOT INTERRUPTED. Any interruption can cause permanent damaged to the microprocessors. You will also note that the colour of the windows change to RED for this part of the process.
ERASING FLASH DEVICE
WARNING - DO NOT INTERRUPT THE ERASE
PROCESS, PERMANENT DAMAGE MAY RESULT.
9. Once this process has finished, the new software will be downloaded to the console and the display will show:
